Ranganathittu

The great Salim Ali persuaded the Mysore kings to declare a set of islets on the Cauvery as a bird sanctuary. An important nesting ground for mostly local birds (and a few migratory ones in December-January), Ranganathittu is a lush, little place 15 km north of Mysore – home to ibises, egrets, cormorants, painted storks and quite a lot more. Getting really close to their habitat is possible if you take a boat with an English-speaking (sort of) guide for company and birding skills.
